Fwd: ISO 639 name changes

In response to recent messages on this list about the name changes in
ISO 639-2, below is a copy of the message that went out to several lists
including this one on Dec. 22, 2008 (I didn't keep all copies but it was
copied to ietf-languages at iana.org). Sorry about the columns getting
messed up.

The purpose was to harmonize the names in all part of ISO 639, not to
change the scope. In ISO 639-5 all group languages are called "[name of
language] languages" and there are no cases of "[name of language]
(Other)". These were not always consistently applied in the past in
639-2, and when ISO 639-5 was completed we decided to harmonize the
names. The indication of whether they are groups that include all
languages in that group or remainder groups is indicated in 639-5 in the
639-2 column.  So it does NOT make that column outdated, since it was
never intended to change the scope.

ISO 639 name changes

 

In connection with the finalization of ISO 639-5 it has been necessary
to review the names of some items that appear in the code lists of more
than one part of ISO 639.

 

In the following list are first given the new names that are valid for
all parts of ISO 639 (in English and French), and on the following line
