Because of buggy programs that execute code in email messages, which
has exactly zero to do with SMTP, POP or IMAP. :'/ BTW,
implementations of POP and SMTP security features in both open-source
and vendor-supplied mailers seem to be getting pretty advanced at this
stage, although there is still more work to do.
