ISO language names

[ISO639-3]

Dear Mr. Whitehead, et al.,

The policy for ISO language names is that there is one language name established for each code. If a new name is proposed for a code, we look to see if the first name is perjorative or wrong. If either of these is true, we replace the original name with the new name. If the previous name is correct, but a new name is being used in the literature, we accept the new name as an added name. Only in a few cases have we accepted two names for a language from the initial request (one of these was for the split of [kzh], for which the two daughter languages had both an ethnonym and a name that was used in the literature--see CR 2011-143).

In general, the additional names on the request form are added as references in the Ethnologue. If someone wants them added to the ISO record, they can do so in another Change Request.

I hope this explains the way names are used in ISO 639 part 3. The focus is on the codes, the names are just to connect the code to the speech variety/language.
