My italian is rusty, but I think the following illustrate both cases with a
single sentence.

Benvenuto, sono stato mandato qui dalla CIA. (speaker male, audience male)
Benvenuta, sono stato mandato qui dalla CIA. (speaker male, audience female)
Benvenuto, sono stata mandata qui dalla CIA. (speaker female, audience male)
