Honestly, in my daytime job I have a much better understanding
of my role, responsibilities and authority than I do in the
IETF... And, I am always confident that my boss will back-up
any decisions or commitments that I make within my areas of
authority (whether or not he agrees with them, BTW), so I feel
comfortable making them.

I don't have same confidence when I'm working in the IETF.
I don't know if that's because I am less sure about my role,
or less sure about the alignment between me and my IETF
manager-equivalents... Partially, it may just be that I'm
used to a more formal type of goals-setting and delegation
than is commonly practiced in the IETF.
