4. Intended meaning of the subtag:
Indicates that the content is a pronunciation respelling of the
language in question. For example, the transcription "nāshən" or
"nayshuhn" for the word "nation" could use the tag "en-respell". As
another example, in monolingual Korean dictionaries give the
pronunciation of a word in a restricted subset of Hangul where
syllables can only end in certain consonants (e.g. U11A8 JONGSONG
KIYEOK is allowed, but U11A9 JONGSEONG SSANGKIYEOK and U11AA JONGSEONG
KIYEOK-SIOS are forbidden). This can be represented by "ko-respell".
For most purposes, this variant subtag is sufficient; such systems are
typically designed to be understood by native speakers without
recourse to a formal system, such as "nayshuhn" in the NBC Handbook of
Pronunciation. Where it becomes important to distinguish precisely a
particular respelling method, that should be done by registration
using this variant as a prefix, so that truncation matching works
properly. For example, if it were necessary to distinguish precisely
the form used by Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, then a
variant could be registered such as mwcoll, allowing the use of
en-respell-mwcoll.
