It was certainly educating, stuff for some notes in 3066ter:

- Many tags offer no clue about the, as you said, "mode",
  it could be written / spoken / signed.  Tags with explicit
  scripts most probably indicate "written", and that could 
  be captures in movies.

- There aren't too many sign languages.  It's nothing like
  "most language subtags times many region subtags".  It's
  a well defined small set, and a generic variant isn't the
  best way to identify it.

- an extension registry offering s-ASL. s-BSL, s-ISL, etc,
  might be a clean solution for signed content.  It doesn't
  answer questions about "written" vs. "spoken" content in 
  some contexts with Suppress-Scripts for deaf users.
