I downloaded the attachment, assuming that apparently being from the list
owner it was likely to be safe, even though the email was mainly an
attachment.

I noticed (after the event) that it seemed to be an exe file, and then ran
a system check which informed me that 1400 files had been altered today.

What's gone on here? What might be the effects?

Has anybody any idea?
