Well, in an ideal world, all email would be signed, and a web of trust 
exist. That would certainly help a great deal with my spam problem.

But Michael is right - we're never going to reach that world until the 
signatures aren't displayed by email software in the same category as 
"PleaseReadThisImportantDocument.odt". Email software has got used to 
not displaying images as attachments if they are inlined in an HTML form 
of the message. Email software which does not support verifying 
signatures should still be smart enough to keep them out of people's faces.
