ISDN for Linux
Disclaimer: I want ISDN here, in Norway, to the UNINETT CISCOs.
That means Euro-ISDN, nothing
else. See the references list for more
general ISDN information.
Main point: It ain't there yet.
Pointers to promising beginnings:
- Jan den Ouden has a
"version 0.1" of a driver that supports EuroISDN on the TELES
card - available via HTTP only. Apparently this has been
integrated with the "isdn4linux" effort; look for that
symbol. It is also rumoured to be able to support synchronous
ISDN (with some kernel patches).
- Mattias Urlichs has had a driver for several months that works
on the German ISDN system, but not on Euro-ISDN. It implements,
among other things, STREAMS in the kernel, and seems like a
much more ambituous project. Available via FTP from ftp.noris.de or a mirror at
uni-stuttgart.
EuroISDN support is apparently in now, but not synchronous mode
PPP.
If you want ISDN to work today, the easiest route to go is to
get yourself an Ethernet interface and an ISDN router or two. Ascend
Pipeline 50 is mentioned as a cheap, workable alternative in the US;
the smallest CISCO routers (Cisco 2503i) will set you back about NOK
10-15.000 this week.
It is also possible to use a pair of "async terminal adapters".
Note that if you want Internet over ISDN, the connectivity vendor may
dictate your choice of equipment!
