  According to the author himself, the main characteristic of these
patterns is that they implement hyphenation that is closer to the
etymology of words; as opposed to phonetics for the other set of
patterns.  They're admittedly tailored to an u=v, i=j orthography, but
that's not particularly relevant: they're first of all about a stylistic
difference.
