True. But variations of spelling within a single orthography do exist.
For example, AHD5 accepts acknowledgment or acknowledgement, adviser or
advisor, aesthetic or esthetic, ameba as a variant of amoeba, amok as a
variant of amuck, analog or analogue, archeology as a variant of archaeology,
and ax as a variant of axe, to mention only words beginning with 'a'.
