Indeed, if it were not exactly like that, we would have an extremely 
difficult time explaining why not.

If you have Standard Latvian content, and your priority in tagging it is 
to maximize searchability, you will probably use 'lv'.  If your priority 
is precision -- specifying that the content is definitely Standard 
Latvian and definitely not Latgalian -- you will probably use 'lvs'.

(On no account could you use 'lav' and still be conformant to BCP 47.)
