As I said back in March 2007 when 'tarask' was being debated:

Politics has no place in deciding whether a variant subtag should be 
registered.  Calling into question the political motivation of those who 
oppose or (in this case) support a proposal is not appropriate for this 
forum.  Language identification and differentiation, and mechanical 
considerations, should be the only criteria for accepting or rejecting a 
proposal.
