Hi, I think we need both the escape sequences and the transliterations to
make the list really international--because of the various systems people
have and the trouble entailed in looking up escape sequences to see what
letters are represented and so on.
My comments are below again (more details).

Why will they have to be undone in five years or whenever???
I use (at the library and on a rented computer) a windows system; most of
those I use cannot make sense of unicode ,
the system is Western European Windows, Latin-1;
the utf-8 escape sequences are thus the way to encode non-Basic Latin
characters;
but a transliteration of these into the "Basic Latin" character set would be
a step in my opinion towards internationalization,
because that is alas all some browsers display besides the numbers!!
Unless we can wait till everyone has a unicode system.
(I still do my email in French in the basic Latin unaccented characters
because of the problems of display with the different systems.)
However, I agree that if we do this, we should format the description and
comments fields for all subtags in the registry (& not just for variants)
this way--using when applicable escape sequences plus Basic Latin
transliteration--
this requires a change in the draft at:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ltru-4646bis-06.txt
(think that is the most recent draft; I do not keep up with it enough;
sorry!)
which is handled by the ltru group & by Addison Phillips.
Then we can update the three variants' comments/descriptions fields
(comments fields for baku1926 and for 1694acad; comments and descriptions
fields for tarask I think--
but something should be submitted to ltru/Addison Phillips)
