filext.com and a few others are useful as FYIs, but it's informative, 
not even semi-official.

There can't be an official registry as extensions do get used in an 
incompatible way as its a per-computer (or often, per-application) 
namespace.

As just one example, .doc is commonly used for text/plain and for 
application/ms-word on different systems.
