    As I said, there may well be some good reasons not to do this. I'm
    sure DNS experts could come up with some reasons.

You don't seem to understand the DNS pritocol. The authority section
in an aswer tells you the name server where you can get authoritative
answers. If you want to use it for something else, you have to change
all the resolvers on the planet.
