Hi.

For those who don't track the IETF-Announce list...

New versions of the "issues/rationale" and "tables" document
have been posted, at

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-klensin-idnabis-issues-07.txt

and

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-faltstrom-idnabis-tables-04.txt

respectively.

A new version of the "protocol" document has been submitted for
posting but seems to be stuck at the moment in a somewhat-broken
I-D submission system.

These documents respond to some of the list discussions of the
last several weeks as well as the outputs of a day-long meeting
held last week (see the Acknowledgments section of "issues" for
a brief description). The changes are fairly significant: the
processing model has been revised (albeit only slightly),
terminology has been changed, and the concept of "MAYBE"
categories eliminated.

We did not address the difficulties with Greek in this pass,
partially because it appeared to be important to get the model
stabilized as a foundation for moving forward. However, the
major issue with the characters that have been discussed is one
of backward compatibility with IDNA2003. Because an
incompatible change in which a character is treated differently
between the two versions could be very confusing and costly, it
is not clear how one would best proceed even if there were
consensus on what should be done in terms of the characters
themselves: compatibility and, in particular, avoiding having
the same string interpreted into two separate A-labels, is a
very strong argument.
