IANA
The contract with IANA will replace or augment the current MoU between the IETF and ICANN. In its simplest form, it would simply be a reconfirmation of the duties of ICANN under the MoU.
Protocol parameter registration:
- Creation of registries (when directed by IETF)
- Assignment of protocol parameters (according to procedures)
- Management of accessible registry repository
IETF registry creation, and many assignments, come as a result of IETF approval of documents in the IESG.
Many registries also allow registration by outside parties - see RFC 2434 for more detail.
